Member for Bunbury Don Punch MLA and Deputy Premier, Minister for Health; Mental Health Roger Cook MLA try out a racing bed at the 2017 Great South West Bed Race Event Launch in February 2017

The beds featured in the Great South West Bed Race are made to specifications defined by the Bed Race Committee. Teams construct their beds to these specifications and adorn their beds and runners according to this years’ race theme: Medicine Throughout History.

Don't have the time, facilities or tools to construct your own bed? Never fear! St John of God Bunbury Hospital have a number of specially made beds available for interested teams to use for the race. Contact Kristy Sharpham on bu.bedrace@sjog.org.au or 08 9722 1621 to find out more!

Best Dressed Beds

The teams gather at Bed Race Square before the race begins to be judged for the ‘Best Dressed Bed’ accolade, with awards for the top 3 best dressed teams and beds for both junior and adult categories. The designs have become so good, that in addition to first, second and third positions, others win special commendations for their endeavours.

Scores of local handymen and dress-makers get drafted in to decorate the beds and adorn the runners. Hundreds of people parade with the teams and in marching bands and dance groups. And hundreds more turn out as volunteers to marshal the event on the day.
